Dr. Wilson cares for hens laying supermarket eggs
“It’s unfortunate people don’t know how birds are raised or where their eggs come from," says veterinarian Dr. Dan Wilson as he visits egg-laying chicken farms in the U.S. "There’s a misperception, people assume there’s a lack of care." The birds that Dr. Wilson cares for are raised in various styles of houses including aviary-style and cage-style. "It’s in our best interest to provide our birds everything they need, that they’re well-housed and not mistreated," he explains. "If birds were mistreated, they would not let eggs.”
Dr. Wilson, veterinarian at Rose Acre Farms in Indiana, examines the flocks in his care by handling some of the birds. “A bird lays an egg every day, we have to maintain their health,” he says. At the farm, he examines the birds’ body condition, bone condition, and fat condition - this at the farm that is second largest egg producer in the U.S. “We do everything we can to make sure our birds are healthy and content in their housing. If people could see what we do for our birds every day, they’d be as content as I am.”
Veterinarians On Call is presented by Zoetis and features vets on the job and their clients across the U.S. who volunteer to be filmed. Those appearing were not compensated to participate and the opinions expressed are theirs.

That’s inhumane.” In this episode, Dr. Pohl and Dr. Chuck Hofacre of the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medic...

Переглядів 9 тис.9 років тому
We dedicate this video in memory of Dr. Samantha Pohl, 1985 - 2015: Many people assume chicken products in US supermarkets come from chickens raised in crowded cages on “factory farms." But that’s not true, says Dr. Chuck Hofacre of the University of Georgia, one of the nation’s top poultry veterinarians. The typical US chicken farm is a family farm consisting of just a few barns, where the ani...

Helpful to see. My horse has to undergo this under general anesthesia. Couldn’t get it out with just local and sedation. Is this issue very common? I’m pretty worried about gen anesthesia.

18-21 days old, that is insane. I raise hogs and I would never consider weaning that early. I guess that is industrial farming vs someone like me who raises heritage breed hogs. I wean at 8 weeks old, they have access to pasture. I give them the best life they can have until slaughter. If they had their tails, you would know how they felt by their tail. I do not dock tails and I have zero issues with tail biting and infection. If their tails are strait there is something wrong, if it's curly, they are happy.

They actaully do have very sharp teeth, and not only that their teeth are always growing, even just brushing up against a tooth is dangerous, also stallions and geldings have wolf teeth that are used for fighting, most of the time they are removed as they have tendency to grow too long, my first horse had them literally grow into his gums cuz his past owners couldnt bring themselves to pay around $100 for a dentist
